General Description
Diphenoxylate Hydrochloride is a piperidine derivative structurally related to meperidine, classified as an opioid antidiarrheal agent acting locally on the gastrointestinal tract with minimal central opioid effects.
Mechanism of Action
Diphenoxylate activates mu-opioid receptors in the intestinal myenteric plexus, enhancing segmental smooth muscle tone and inhibiting propulsive peristalsis while reducing intestinal fluid secretion, increasing stool consistency.
Application
Used in the symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea. Diphenoxylate Hydrochloride is indicated for non-infective diarrhea, functional diarrhea, and adjunctive management of inflammatory bowel disease diarrhea.
