Betamethasone sodium phosphate was intercalated into layered double hydroxide single-layer nanosheets via a coassembly route driven by electrostatic attraction between positively charged LDH nanosheets and BMP anions. The resulting BMP-LDH nanohybrids were then coated with liposomes composed of lecithin and cholesterol through a reverse evaporation method to prepare BLN@LS nanocomposites. The nanocomposites exhibited excellent water re-dispersity and enhanced drug sustained-release performance compared to uncoated BLNs. Drug release from the nanocomposites was pH-dependent and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, with intraparticle diffusion as the rate-limiting step. This liposome-coating strategy effectively combined the beneficial features of LDH carriers and liposomal vectors while mitigating their individual drawbacks.
