General Description

Rubidium Chloride Rb-82 is a radiopharmaceutical containing the short-lived positron-emitting isotope rubidium-82. As a potassium analog, it is actively transported into myocardial cells via the sodium-potassium ATPase pump.

Mechanism of Action

Rubidium-82 mimics potassium and is extracted from coronary blood flow by myocardial cells via Na+/K+-ATPase. Positron emission from Rb-82 decay is detected by PET scanners, producing quantitative myocardial perfusion images.

Application

Used in positron emission tomography myocardial perfusion imaging. Rubidium Chloride Rb-82 is indicated for non-invasive detection and evaluation of coronary artery disease and myocardial ischemia.

What advantage does Rb-82 PET offer over SPECT myocardial imaging?

Rb-82 provides higher image resolution and accurate quantitative blood flow measurement compared to SPECT, with a short 75-second half-life enabling rapid rest-stress protocols.
