General Description

Warfarin Potassium is the potassium salt of warfarin, a coumarin-class oral anticoagulant. It functions as a vitamin K antagonist, interfering with the gamma-carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors.

Mechanism of Action

Warfarin inhibits vitamin K epoxide reductase, preventing regeneration of reduced vitamin K required for gamma-carboxylation of clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X. This produces a gradual anticoagulant effect as existing factors are depleted.

Application

Used in the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders. Warfarin Potassium is indicated for deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation stroke prevention, and anticoagulation after mechanical heart valve replacement.
