General Description

Sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) is an inorganic salt made up of sodium cations and sulfate anions. It usually takes the form of a white crystalline solid. The salt can occur as an anhydrous salt or as the decahydrate (known as Glauber's salt). It is highly soluble in water, and the anhydrous form is hygroscopic.

Application

Sodium sulphate has many industrial uses. The main application is in detergents, where it is used as a filler and processing aid to keep powdered soaps free-flowing while providing maximum concentration. It is also used in glass manufacture as a fining agent to eliminate small air bubbles and prevent scumming when the ingredients are melted together. Sodium sulphate converts into sodium sulphide in the "Kraft process" used to manufacture wood pulp, where it is used to digest lignin. It is also used as a leveling agent in textile dyeing and as an anhydrous drying agent in laboratories, to remove traces of water from organic liquids.
