General Description
Methyprylon is a piperidinedione derivative classified as a non-barbiturate sedative-hypnotic. It produces intermediate-duration sedation through GABAergic mechanisms distinct from benzodiazepines.
Mechanism of Action
Methyprylon enhances GABA-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system, producing sedative and hypnotic effects. It also depresses the reticular activating system, reducing sleep latency.
Application
Used in the short-term management of insomnia. Methyprylon is indicated for transient and short-term insomnia, particularly in patients who have not responded to or cannot tolerate barbiturate hypnotics.
