General Description
Methoxamine hydrochloride is a synthetic sympathomimetic amine, a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist, with a dimethoxyphenyl and an amine group. Its chemical structure is 2-amino-1-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-propanol hydrochloride. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is soluble in water.
Mechanism of Action
Methoxamine acts as a selective agonist at alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, causing vasoconstriction and an increase in peripheral vascular resistance. This leads to an increase in blood pressure. The drug has minimal beta-adrenergic effects, making it useful for the treatment of hypotension without causing tachycardia.
Application
Methoxamine is indicated for the treatment of hypotension during anesthesia and for the management of shock. It is also used for the treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.
