Lapyrium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound with a pyridinium head group and a long alkyl chain (lauryl group), functioning as a cationic surfactant. The molecule has both hydrophilic (cationic nitrogen) and lipophilic (dodecyl chain) domains, giving it surface-active properties.
Mechanism of Action
Lapyrium chloride reduces surface tension at interfaces and disrupts lipid bilayers of bacterial and fungal cell membranes. The cationic head group binds to negatively charged microbial surfaces, displacing cations and causing leakage of intracellular contents. It also denatures proteins and inhibits microbial metabolic enzymes. The surfactant action is concentration-dependent, with bactericidal effects at higher concentrations.
Application
Lapyrium chloride is used as a topical antiseptic and disinfectant for skin cleansing prior to invasive procedures or for wound irrigation. It is also employed as a preservative in ophthalmic solutions and as a detergent in pharmaceutical formulations. The compound is not absorbed systemically; its activity is limited to the site of application. It has low irritancy compared to other quaternary ammonium antiseptics.
