General Description
Chlorzoxazone is a centrally acting muscle relaxant with a benzoxazolone ring and a chlorine substituent. Its chemical structure is 5-chloro-2-benzoxazolinone. Chlorzoxazone is a white to off-white crystalline powder, practically insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. The molecule is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme CYP2E1.
Mechanism of Action
Chlorzoxazone acts as a centrally acting muscle relaxant by depressing polysynaptic reflexes in the spinal cord and subcortical areas of the brain. It does not directly affect the neuromuscular junction or skeletal muscle. The drug is also a potent inhibitor of the enzyme cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), which is involved in the metabolism of many drugs and toxins.
Application
Chlorzoxazone is indicated as an adjunct to rest, physical therapy, and other measures for the relief of acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions, such as muscle spasms, strains, and sprains. It is effective in reducing muscle spasm and pain, and improving mobility. The drug is also used as a research tool to study CYP2E1 activity.
