General Description
Pemoline is a central nervous system stimulant that was previously approved for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is a non-amphetamine, oxazolidinone derivative with a longer duration of action than methylphenidate.
Mechanism of Action
Pemoline is believed to increase dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the prefrontal cortex and striatum, similar to other ADHD medications, though its precise mechanism is less well-characterized. It acts as a weak dopamine reuptake inhibitor and may also enhance dopaminergic release. Unlike amphetamines, it does not block the vesicular monoamine transporter. The drug has a slow onset (3-4 weeks for full effect) and a plasma half-life of approximately 12 hours.
Application
Historically, pemoline was indicated for ADHD in children and adolescents as a second-line agent when other stimulants were ineffective or poorly tolerated.

Does Pemoline require protection from light during long-term storage?

Yes, it is photosensitive. UV light can cause photodegradation and discoloration. Store in light-resistant, tightly sealed containers, preferably amber glass.
