General Description

Calcium gluceptate is the calcium salt of gluceptic acid (glucoheptonic acid), a calcium-containing compound with a molecular weight of 490.4 Da. It is a white crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water, producing a neutral solution with 8.5% calcium content. The molecule contains a seven-carbon sugar acid (glucoheptonic acid) chelated to a calcium ion.

Mechanism of Action

Upon dissociation, the calcium ion (Ca²⁺) provides a source of bioavailable calcium, essential for neuromuscular function, bone mineralization, blood clotting, and cardiac contractility. The gluceptate anion is metabolized to bicarbonate, providing a mild alkalinizing effect. Calcium ions stabilize myocardial cell membranes and counteract the effects of hyperkalemia by increasing the threshold potential.

Application

Calcium gluceptate is indicated for the acute treatment of hypocalcemia, hyperkalemia, and hypermagnesemia, and as an adjunct in cardiac arrest resuscitation. It is also used as a calcium supplement in total parenteral nutrition.
