General Description
Benzoxonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) functioning as a broad-spectrum antiseptic. Its cationic quaternary ammonium group and lipophilic alkyl chain enable potent membrane-active biocidal activity.
Mechanism of Action
The cationic headgroup of the molecule is electrostatically attracted to the negatively charged components of the microbial cell envelope, leading to disruption of the cell membrane. This interaction causes leakage of intracellular contents, protein denaturation, and inactivation of certain bacterial enzymes, ultimately resulting in cell death. The effect is concentration-dependent, exhibiting both bactericidal and bacteriostatic properties.
Application
Benzoxonium chloride is employed as a topical antiseptic and disinfectant for the prevention and treatment of superficial infections. It suppresses the growth of microorganisms on skin and mucous membranes, including in oral cavity applications. It has also been investigated for its anti-infective activity against parasitic organisms.
