General Description

Vidarabine Monophosphate (ara-A monophosphate) is the monophosphate ester of vidarabine (ara-A), an analog of the natural nucleoside adenosine in which the ribose sugar is replaced by D-arabinose. The monophosphate form is the initial intracellular metabolite of vidarabine, further phosphorylated to the active triphosphate (ara-ATP) that inhibits viral DNA polymerase.

Mechanism of Action

Vidarabine Monophosphate is an antimetabolite that functions through its triphosphate metabolite (ara-ATP). Vidarabine monophosphate is further phosphorylated by cellular kinases to ara-ATP, which competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase with higher affinity than host cell DNA polymerases.
