Triclofos sodium is a monophosphate sodium salt of trichloroethanol that is physiologically and pharmacologically similar to chloral hydrate, with better palatability and less gastric irritation. A retrospective study of 869 children who received triclofos sodium for procedural sedation in neurodiagnostic studies demonstrated that the mean dose was 50.2 mg/kg, with adequate sedation depth achieved in 88.5 percent of cases. The study population included 364 children with neurocognitive diagnoses. Median time to sedation was 45 minutes and median duration of sedation was 35 minutes. The study concluded that triclofos sodium, when administered in a controlled and monitored environment, may be safe for use in children, including those with underlying neurocognitive disorders.
