General Description

Tribulus Terrestris Extract is an extract standardized to contain steroidal saponins and polyphenol antioxidants. It is used in dietary supplements at the highest levels as a natural herb extract for maintaining cardiovascular and metabolic health and vitality. Tribulus Terrestris Extract can be used in professional supplement formulas to promote heart and metabolic health and healthy aging.

Mechanism of Action

The pharmacological activity of Tribulus Terrestris Extract is attributed to its saponins that are anti-atherosclerotic as they are able to prevent vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and can also act as antiplatelet agents. On a cellular basis, Tribulus Terrestris Extract can downregulate NF-kB and ERK1/2 to decrease oxidative stress and inflammation and can induce apoptosis in certain cells. Tribulus terrestris’ fruits and leaves are rich in steroidal saponins (protodioscin, diosgenin, tribulosin), flavonoids (kaempferol, tribuloside) and alkaloids (harmine, tribulusterine) that confer diuretic, aphrodisiac, anti-urolithic, antidiabetic, hypolipidemic, immunomodulatory, neuro- and cardio-protective activities.
In vitro and rodent studies show Tribulus terrestris extract induces apoptosis in breast, prostate and liver cancer cells via caspase-3/-8 activation and NF-κB down-regulation; inhibits calcium-oxalate crystallization; lowers blood pressure by ACE inhibition; increases testosterone, sperm count and folliculogenesis without altering basal androgen levels.
