General Description
Tetrahydrozoline Hydrochloride is an imidazoline derivative that functions as a direct-acting sympathomimetic amine with selective alpha-adrenergic agonist activity. Its chemical structure features a tetrahydroisoquinoline core, which provides vasoconstrictive properties without the cardinal effects associated with non-selective adrenergic stimulation. It is used in ophthalmic and nasal formulations for its decongestant action.
Mechanism of Action
Tetrahydrozoline Hydrochloride activates alpha-1 adrenergic receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells of conjunctival and nasal mucosal blood vessels, causing vasoconstriction. In the eye, this reduces blood flow to the conjunctiva and decreases transudation of fluid across the conjunctival epithelium, thereby reducing conjunctival redness and edema. In nasal mucosa, it causes shrinkage of swollen mucosa and improves nasal patency. The effect is rapid in onset and sustained for several hours.
Application
Tetrahydrozoline Hydrochloride is indicated for the temporary symptomatic relief of ocular redness due to minor eye irritations (e.g., from dust, smoke, swimming, or wearing contact lenses) and for the temporary relief of nasal congestion due to the common cold, sinusitis, or allergic rhinitis.
