General Description
Terbutaline sulfate is a synthetic catecholamine derivative with a tertiary butyl group, belonging to the class of beta-2 adrenergic agonists. Its chemical structure is 5-[2-(tert-butylamino)-1-hydroxyethyl]benzene-1,3-diol sulfate.
Mechanism of Action
Terbutaline acts as a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, stimulating the production of cyclic AMP (cAMP) in bronchial smooth muscle cells. This leads to bronchodilation, relaxation of the airways, and inhibition of mast cell mediator release. The drug also has a tocolytic effect by relaxing the uterine smooth muscle, although this is not its primary indication.
Application
Terbutaline is indicated for the treatment of bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema, providing bronchodilation and relief of bronchospasm. It is also used for the management of premature labor (as a tocolytic agent). The drug is effective in improving respiratory function and reducing the frequency of asthma exacerbations.
