General Description
Sulfacetamide Sodium is a sulfonamide antibacterial agent available in topical ophthalmic formulations for the treatment of ocular surface infections. As a sodium salt, it is highly water soluble and has excellent corneal penetration when applied topically. Sulfacetamide competitively inhibits bacterial dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), blocking the folic acid synthesis pathway in susceptible bacteria.
Mechanism of Action
Sulfacetamide Sodium acts as a competitive inhibitor of bacterial dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), the enzyme responsible for incorporating p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into the dihydropteroate intermediate of the bacterial folic acid synthesis pathway. By blocking folate synthesis, sulfacetamide prevents the production of tetrahydrofolate, which is essential for the synthesis of purines, thymidine, and ultimately bacterial DNA replication. Susceptible organisms include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species, and certain Gram-negative bacteria.
Application
Sulfacetamide Sodium is indicated for the topical treatment of conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and other superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Streptococcus species, Haemophilus influenzae, and other sulfonamide-susceptible organisms.

Sodium sulfacetamide is a sulfonamide antibacterial agent used in dermatology for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It inhibits bacterial dihydroperoate synthetase, blocking folic acid synthesis and exerting a bacteriostatic effect against organisms including Propionibacterium acnes. It is typically formulated at 10% concentration, often combined with 5% sulfur for synergistic keratolytic, antibacterial, and antiparasitic effects. Common clinical applications include papulopustular rosacea (twice daily for 8 weeks), acne vulgaris (decreasing inflammatory lesions by 80-83% over 12 weeks), seborrheic dermatitis (improvement in 93% of cases), and perioral dermatitis.
