General Description
Sophorolipid is a glycolipid biosurfactant, one of the well-known high-performance biosurfactants, which is mainly produced by non-pathogenic yeasts. Sophorolipid has an excellent environmental profile in terms of toxicity, biodegradability and surface activity better than synthetic analogs.
Mechanism of Action
Sophorolipid like other amphiphilic biosurfactants reduce the surface and interfacial tension by adsorption at interfaces and by micelle formation at low CMC.
Application
Sophorolipid has great potential applications in the food and cosmetic industries as natural emulsifiers, wetting agents, biopreservatives due to its potent antimicrobial activity and good skin compatibility. Sophorolipid has been explored for various applications in the pharmaceutical industry as a drug delivery vehicle and therapeutic agent.
Sophorolipid is recognized for its detergent, antiviral, immunomodulatory, and anticancer properties. Sophorolipid can inactivate SARS-CoV-2 through its lipid envelope disruption activity against other enveloped viruses, such as HIV, influenza, and herpesvirus. Furthermore, Sophorolipid may help to prevent the cytokine storm that characterizes severe COVID-19. Sophorolipid was found to downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β, and upregulate anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as TGF-β1. This immunomodulatory activity may prevent the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome and multi-organ failure. Sophorolipid also exhibited anticancer activity in a range of in vitro and in vivo models, which may be of benefit to COVID-19 patients with comorbid cancers.
