General Description
Propoxyphene hydrochloride is a synthetic opioid analgesic belonging to the diphenylpropylamine class, structurally related to methadone but with a less potent effect. Its structure consists of a propoxyphene base with a hydrochloride salt, forming a white crystalline powder. The molecule has a chiral center, and the commercial form is the (2S,3R)-isomer, which is the active enantiomer.
Mechanism of Action
Propoxyphene acts as a weak mu-opioid receptor agonist, producing analgesia by binding to opioid receptors in the central nervous system and altering pain perception. It also has mild local anesthetic properties. Its analgesic potency is approximately one-half to one-third that of codeine.
Application
Propoxyphene was indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate pain, often in combination with acetaminophen or aspirin.
