General Description

Propantheline bromide is a synthetic quaternary ammonium compound with a xanthine core, acting as a muscarinic receptor antagonist. Its structure is a 9-xanthenecarboxylate ester with a quaternary ammonium group, forming a white crystalline powder.

Mechanism of Action

Propantheline competitively blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors at the parasympathetic ganglia and at the postganglionic nerve endings of smooth muscle, glands, and the heart. This reduces gastrointestinal motility, decreases gastric acid and saliva secretion, and relaxes smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. The quaternary ammonium group prevents significant penetration of the blood-brain barrier, reducing central nervous system side effects.

Application

Propantheline is indicated for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and hyperhidrosis. It is also used to reduce gastrointestinal motility in patients with gastrointestinal spasms and as an adjunct in the management of pancreatitis.

Does Propantheline Bromide require protection from light and moisture during storage?

Yes, it is sensitive to both light and moisture. Light causes photodegradation and moisture promotes hydrolysis of the ester groups. Store in light-resistant, tightly sealed containers with desiccant.
