General Description
Potassium Aminosalicylate is the potassium salt of 4-aminosalicylic acid (para-aminosalicylic acid, PAS), an antitubercular compound structurally related to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). The potassium salt form provides improved water solubility compared to the free acid.
Mechanism of Action
4-Aminosalicylic acid acts as a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthase in Mycobacterium tuberculosis by substituting for para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in the folate biosynthesis pathway, producing non-functional analogs of dihydrofolate that inhibit bacterial growth.
Application
Indicated for the treatment of tuberculosis as a second-line antitubercular agent. Potassium Aminosalicylate inhibits mycobacterial folate biosynthesis by competing with PABA at dihydropteroate synthase, disrupting essential folate-dependent metabolic pathways in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
