General Description
Norgestrel is a synthetic progestin with a 13β-ethyl group and a 17α-ethinyl group, structurally related to norethisterone. Its chemical structure is 13β-ethyl-17α-ethinyl-17β-hydroxy-4-gonen-3-one. Norgestrel is a white to off-white crystalline powder, practically insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. It is a potent progestational agent.
Mechanism of Action
Norgestrel acts as a progestin by binding to the progesterone receptor, suppressing ovulation by inhibiting the release of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland. It also changes the cervical mucus and endometrium, making it less favorable for implantation. The drug has weak androgenic and anti-estrogenic activity.
Application
Norgestrel is indicated as a component of combined oral contraceptives and as a single-agent contraceptive. It is also used for the treatment of menstrual disorders, such as endometriosis and dysmenorrhea. The drug is effective in preventing pregnancy and regulating the menstrual cycle.
