General Description

Norethynodrel is a synthetic progestin with a 5(10)-double bond and a 17α-ethinyl group, structurally related to norethisterone. Its chemical structure is 17α-ethinyl-10-nor-19-nortestosterone, with a double bond between carbon 5 and 10. Norethynodrel is a white to off-white crystalline powder, practically insoluble in water. It is a progestational agent with weak estrogenic activity.

Mechanism of Action

Norethynodrel acts as a progestin by binding to the progesterone receptor, and it also has weak estrogenic activity. It suppresses ovulation by inhibiting the release of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland through negative feedback. The drug also changes the cervical mucus and endometrium, making it less favorable for implantation.

Application

Norethynodrel is indicated as a component of combined oral contraceptives for the prevention of pregnancy. It is also used for the treatment of menstrual disorders, such as endometriosis and dysmenorrhea. The drug is effective in preventing ovulation and regulating the menstrual cycle.

Does Norethynodrel require protection from light during long-term storage?

Yes, it is photosensitive. UV exposure can cause photodegradation and isomerization of the steroid ring. Store in light-resistant containers, preferably amber glass.
