General Description

Hydroxyamphetamine Hydrobromide is a sympathomimetic amine of the amphetamine class that primarily promotes norepinephrine release from adrenergic nerve terminals, producing peripheral alpha-adrenergic effects.

Mechanism of Action

Hydroxyamphetamine enters adrenergic nerve terminals via the norepinephrine transporter and displaces norepinephrine from storage vesicles. Released norepinephrine stimulates alpha-1 receptors on the pupillary dilator muscle, producing mydriasis.

Application

Used in ophthalmology for pupillary dilation. Hydroxyamphetamine Hydrobromide is indicated for diagnostic mydriasis and for localizing Horner syndrome lesions by differentiating preganglionic from postganglionic damage.
