General Description
Haloprogin is a synthetic halogenated diphenyl ether antifungal agent, with a chlorine and an iodine substituent on its diphenyl ether ring. Its chemical structure is 1,2,4-trichloro-3-(4-iodophenyl)benzene. Haloprogin is a white to off-white crystalline powder, practically insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.
Mechanism of Action
Haloprogin exerts its antifungal activity by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of the fungal cell membrane, and by disrupting the cellular membrane integrity. It also interferes with the fungal cytochrome P450 enzymes, leading to the accumulation of toxic sterols and cell death. The drug is fungicidal against dermatophytes and yeasts.
Application
Haloprogin is indicated for the topical treatment of tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis (ringworm) caused by Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton species. It is also effective against cutaneous candidiasis.
