General Description

Candeptin is a polyene macrolide antifungal antibiotic produced by Streptomyces griseus. It belongs to the same structural class as amphotericin B and nystatin, characterized by a large lactone ring with conjugated double bonds.

Mechanism of Action

Candeptin binds to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, forming transmembrane pores that disrupt membrane permeability and cause leakage of intracellular ions, ultimately leading to fungal cell death through osmotic instability.

Application

Used in the treatment of localized fungal infections. Candeptin is indicated for candidiasis of the gastrointestinal tract and localized Candida infections caused by susceptible species.
