General Description
Calcium carbonate (chemical formula CaCO3) is a common substance found in rocks as minerals such as limestone, marble or chalk. It is also the main constituent of shells of marine organisms, pearls, and eggshells. Calcium carbonate is a white, odorless powder or colorless crystal. Calcium carbonate in its pure state has low solubility in water, but it can easily dissolve in acid, releasing carbon dioxide.
Application
Calcium carbonate is used in a variety of applications. It can be used in cement and concrete building materials as well as filler in paints and plastics. In agriculture, it is used to neutralize soil pH and supply calcium nutrition. It can be added to food or pharmaceutical preparations as a dietary calcium supplement, antacid, or tablet excipient. Calcium carbonate is also used to purify water and make paper whiter. It is used in the production of glass, ceramics and rubber products.
