General Description

Benzthiazide is a synthetic thiazide diuretic, a benzothiadiazine derivative, with a sulfonamide group. Its chemical structure is 6-chloro-3-[(phenylmethyl)thio]-2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-7-sulfonamide 1,1-dioxide. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Mechanism of Action

Benzthiazide acts by inhibiting the sodium-chloride symporter in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney, blocking the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions. This results in osmotic diuresis and increased excretion of sodium, potassium, and water, leading to a reduction in blood pressure and edema.

Application

Benzthiazide is indicated for the treatment of hypertension and edema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and renal dysfunction. It is used as an adjunct to other antihypertensive agents and is effective in reducing blood pressure and fluid retention.

Does Benzthiazide require protection from light and moisture during storage?

Yes, it is sensitive to both light and moisture. Light causes photodegradation and moisture promotes hydrolysis of the benzothiadiazine ring. Store in light-resistant, tightly sealed containers with desiccant.
