The nonionic, weakly hydrophobic 2-Hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA) units and the ionic, hydrophilic AMHS units are thus incorporated on the same backbone, in order to allow tuning the overall hydrophilic-hydrophobic character (dictating the hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions with water, and therefore the lower critical solution temperature) of the resulting copolymer by simply adjusting the HPA/AMHS molar ratio. Only intermediate copolymers are reversibly thermo-sensitive, while homopoly (AMHS) is too hydrophilic to have an LCST. This thus shows that the HPA content is indeed the parameter that tunes the temperature response, whereas the AMHS moiety offers additional pH- and ion-sensitivity.
