Four different gelatin/alginate based scaffolds modified with HAp and second modifier hydrated magnesium chloride (two concentrations: 1.90% and 2.88%), ZnO and nHAp were prepared by the two-step freeze-drying process. Hydrogels had a gradient hierarchical porosity with low surface porosity and high porosity towards the center similar to natural cartilage.
Variation of magnesium chloride did not show any statistically significant impact on permeability; however, scaffolds with higher concentrations of MgCl₂ showed larger pore sizes (up to 1430 μm) and decreased mechanical strength as compared to lower MgCl₂ concentration (1.90%). Addition of ZnO resulted in scaffolds with the highest permeability and mechanical performance while scaffolds modified with nHAp displayed the lowest permeability. MgCl₂ scaffolds with lower magnesium content displayed better mechanical properties.
