Ultrasound-assisted DMSO method can make quick (<10 min) and controllable starch gel formations due to DMSO–water synergism. Medicinal herb Trichosanthes kirilowii pulp starch with good swelling properties was pre-dispersed in DMSO. Ultrasound helped molecular substitution and polymer chain entanglement to form starch gels. It is also tunable in viscosity (broad and accurate range) by modulating starch and DMSO concentrations. As DMSO is a green and biocompatible solvent with good solubilizing capability for many drugs and has skin penetration ability, gelation of starch was achieved in one step without the addition of a cross-linker or requiring any long time retrogradation process. This gel incorporated both hydrophilic (methotrexate) and hydrophobic (MoS2) actives and showed high adherence and transdermal capability. This method can be further used for developing psoriasis patches and surface modified hemodialysis membranes with a new option for personalized biomedical therapy.
